Abstract;A questionnaire survey was sent to 500 patients with atopic dermatitis and 435 responses were obtained. The patient group scored higher compared to a normal control group in terms of both state anxiety and trait anxiety. Despite the fact that the correlation between pruritus and frequency of scratching and also between the result of the STAI and pruritus were low, an association between state anxiety and frequency of scratching was suggested. Approximately 37% of respondents have discontented with their therapy, primarily because they felt it was ineffective; they apparently thought that therapy should both be markedly and quickly effective. We believe that it is important in treating atopic dermatitis to pay special attention to mental care, as well as adequate drug therapy. (author abst.)
