Abstract;Infrared-absorption spectra of sulfur in diamond anvil cell at pressures up to 58 GPa are reported. The overtone of the S-S stretching modes (2.NU.10) continuously shifted to the high-frequency side up to 20 GPa. No apparent peak was observed at 20-35GPa, suggesting amorphization of the sample. On further compression above 37 GPa, three peaks appeared. These spectral changes are consistent with x-ray diffraction data. (author abst.)
