Abstract;Adenocheck, an immunochromatography kit used for the detection of adenovirus antigens, has been used for the diagnosis of adenoviral conjunctivitis and, recently, adenoviral respiratory tract infections. In this study, the author evaluated its usefulness for the detection of adenovirus infections in childhood. From August 1997 to December 2000, 298 children who were suspected of having adenovirus infections were studied. The author collected pharyngeal swabs from each child, and subjected the specimens to both the Adenocheck test and conventional viral cultures. Adenovirus was isolated by culture in 103 cases, and 97 of those 103 cases (94.2%) were positive for adenovirus when analyzed by the Adenocheck test. Of the 195 cases with a negative culuture, 21 were positive when analyzed by the Adenocheck test, and 20 of the 21 were positive when analyzed by polymerase chain reaction. The Adenocheck test produced only 1 false-positive case and had a specificity of 99.4%. (author abst.)
