Abstract;Post-traumatic thrombosis of the internal carotid artery was first presented by Caldwell in 1936. Sporadically since then, similar cases have been documented in Japan, however, it does not seen it is well known to us. We reported a one-year-old girl whose left internal carotid artery was occluded secondary to intraoral trauma. The patient had fallen with a toothbrush in the mouth and sufferred a palate injury. Forty-four hours after injury, she repeated clonic seizures. A magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) was performed and demonstrated an occlusion of the left carotid artery past just above the bifurcation of the common carotid artery. To our knowledge, there has been no literature describing the internal carotid artery occlusion secondary to intraoral trauma shown by MRA instead of cerebral angiography in Japan, and MRA was considered to be useful for early diagnosis and follow-up. In conclusion, subsequent internal carotid artery occlusion and delayed neurologic complications should be carefully considered in children with intraoral trauma. (author abst.)
