Abstract;Elastic properties of structure I methane hydrate have been determined as a function of pressure up to 0.6 GPa at 23.DEG.C. by the high-pressure Brillouin spectroscopy. The pressure dependence of elastic constants of structure I methane hydrate is very similar to that of ice-Ih excepting for C11. The value of longitudinal acoustic velocity along the <100> direction of methane hydrate at 0.02 GPa is 3.63 km/s which is about 10% lower than the average of the longitudinal acoustic velocities in ice-Ih phase at ?35.5.DEG.C. and atmospheric pressure.
