| Abstract; Our puropse was to detect infants with hearing impairment at the health examination. The study population consisted of 1,461 infants who live in Furano city and the suburban 3 towns during a 3-year period. Hearing screening by high-risk registry, physician observation, parental recognition and/or simple hearing ability test using a bell was done at the health examination. Auditory brainstem responses were done in 51 infants who failed the screening test. 3 infants were identified with bilateral permanent hearing impairment. The frequency of bilateral permanent hearing impairment requiring intervention was about 2.1 per 1,000 infants. The mean age of the hearing impairment confirmation was 28.3 months. (author abst.) |
