| Abstract;Neurotrophic factors(NTFs) play an important role in survival and differentiation of neurons. Therefore, genetic variations in NTFs are potentially causal to neuropsychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and Alzheimer's disease. We performed polymorphism analysis on the gene encoding the VGF protein, which is a neurosecretary protein inducible by neurotrophins and abundantly expressed in developing neurons. We searched for polymorphisms with direct sequencing for approximately 2500bp DNA sequence that encompasses the coding and neighboring regions in a sample of 20 patients with schizophrenia, 20 with bipolar disorder, and 20 with Alzheimer's disease. Against our expectation, however, there was no polymorphism in the region that we examined, although we detected several sequence errors reported by a previous study. Our results suggest that DNA sequence of the VGF gene is highly conserved and there is no evidence that genetic variations of the VGF gene are associated with susceptibility to neuropsychiatric diseases.
