| Abstract;Drug-induced extrapyramidal disorders(DIEPDs) are disabling side effects which profoundly affect the quality of life of chronic schizophrenic patients. Using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS), we investigated the metabolic basis of DIEPDs. Single voxel 1H-MRS of the left putamen was performed in sixteen schizophrenics and seventeen healthy controls. Millimolar quantification was made for N-acetylaspartate, choline-containing compounds, creatine plus phosphocreatine, myo-inositol and glutamine-glutamate complex. None of these neural metabolite concentrations showed significant difference between schizophrenics and controls. In addition, among schizophrenics only, no relationship was seen between neural metabolite concentrations and severity of psychosis, current and cumulative dosage of antipsychotics and severity of parkinsonism. Our results suggest that, in relatively milder form of DIEPDs which our subjects had, no detectable metabolic or degenerative changes are in progress in basal ganglia, which corroborate the reversibility of extrapyramidal symptoms.
