Abstract; This paper describes development of bone cutting device for medical bone lengthening operation. Conventional bone cutting by chisel and hammer gives cleaner cut surface than ultrasonic or laser bone cutting. The cleaner surface results in better bone growth after the operation. The new device controls the velocity of a piston of a pneumatic actuator which collide with the chisel attached at the end of the cylinder. Preliminary experiments has shown that the new bone cutting device is capable of cutting bones. Results on piston velocity and cutting characteristics are give. (author abst.)
