Abstract;Clinical efficacy and safety of salmeterol xinafoate dry powder 50.MU.g b.i.d. was examined following 4-week consecutive administration to 10 patients (chronic bronchitis: 3, pulmonary emphysema: 7) with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD). 1) In final overall improvement, 40.0% of patients was evaluated as "Moderately improved or better" and 80.0%, as "Mildly improved or better". 2) In overall safety, 100% was assessed as "Safe" for no adverse events nor abnormal findings in clinical laboratory examination values had appeared. 3) As to assessment of clinical usefulness "Useful or better" results were seen in 40.0% and "Slightly useful or better", in 80.0%, as in the case for the final overall improvement. These data demonstrate that salmeterol xinafoate dry powder is both useful and safe drug when given to patients with COPD. (author abst.)
