| Abstract; The elevation of serum HDL-cholesterol is called"hyperalphalipoproteinemia", however the pathophysiological mechanisms for this condition are heterogeneous. It is caused by a variety of qualitative and quantitative abnormalities of molecules involved in the reverse cholesterol transport, a major protective system against atherosclerosis. Especially, plasma cholesteryl ester transfer protein(CETP) deficiency contributes to more than half of a marked hyperalphalipoproteinemia in the Japanese population. CETP deficiency is not a "longevity syndrome", but patients with this disease are accompanied by an enhanced atherosclerosis. Thus, hyperalphalipoproteinemia is a state of impaired reverse cholesterol transport in humans. (author abst.) |
