Abstract;Low levels of high-density lipoprotein(HDL-C) constitute a strong risk factor for developing coronary heart disease. This risk can be decreased by even slight improvements in HDL-C levels. A growing number of trials that used fibrates, niacin, thiazolidinediones and statin alone or in combination with other lipid-altering agents have shown that these drugs are effective for reducing total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C) and triglycerides, and for increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) levels.
