Abstract;Bezafibrate is a commonly used medicine for hyperlipidemia and is known to have an effect of lowering biliary enzymes. To evaluate the efficacy of bezafibrate in asymptomatic primary biliary cirrhosis(aPBC), 7 aPBC patients who had been treated with ursodeoxycholic acid but shown incomplete responses were treated with oral administration of 400mg/day of bezafibrate for at least 6 months. In all patients, values of alkaline phosphatase decreased and in 6 patients, values of .GAMMA.-glutamyltransferase decreased. But values of AST(aspartate aminotransferase) and ALT(alanine aminotransferase) were not increased. Serum immunoglobulin M(IgM) decresed in 3 patients but antimitochondrial antibody titers were not affected. The present data suggest that bezafibrate has additional effects and is safe for aPBC. The evaluations of long-term efficacy and toxicity including histological changes are needed. (author abst.)
