| Abstract; The puropse of this study were to investigate maternal attachment of mothers with experiences of separations from their infants, and to identify related maternal and familial factors. Forty-seven mothers participated in this study and their infants aged from 1 to 8 months had undergone heart operations due to congenital heart diseases. The survey was carried out by sending self-administered questionnaires composed of a MAI (Maternal Attachment Inventry) scale and items concerning related factors. When MAI scores were compared to ones obtained from mothers with healthy infants, the participants' scores with early post neonatal infants (1-2months) were statistically low (p<0.01), while those scores with late post neonatal infants (3-8 months) were high (p<0.05). As for the relationships among MAI scores, maternal characteristics and familial situations, there were statistically significant differences in 3 items such as mother's sense of fulfillment (p<0.01), spouse's support (p<0.01) and separation period (p<0.01). These results indicate that temporarily poor maternal attachment caused by separation can increase with mother's fulfillment and spouse's support. (author abst.) |
