Abstract;Cerium tetrafluoride (CeF4) was synthesized from cerium trifluoride (CeF3) by the direct fluorination with fluorine gas. The two kinds of CeF4 which are metastable CeF4 (CeF4-I) and stable CeF4 (CeF4-II) could be synthesized. The CeF4-I formed at a temperature up to 543K returned to CeF3 with releasing elementary fluorine under the dynamic evaculation (104Pa) or even in the fluorine (26.7kPa). As the results of X-ray diffraction-Rietveld analysis, the structure of CeF4-I was determined as a monoclinic structure (a=12.61.ANGS., b=10.63.ANGS., c=8.22.ANGS., .BETA.=126.06.DEG.). And the cell volume of the CeF4-I was a little bit larger than that of the CeF4-II. (author abst.)
