Abstract;New haptic devices using sheets made of flexible material such as rubber are proposed. Controlling the tension of the sheets, the devices vary compliance of the sheets in the normal direction; users can feel various kinds of compliance if they touch the sheets. The devices are suitable for displaying soft objects. A prototype device using a square rubber sheet is developed. This device controls the tension of the sheet by pulling its four corners with four motors. The normal force applied to the center of the sheet and the normal displacement at this point are measured, then the static characteristics of the device is obtained. The result shows that the developed device can display variable compliance. (author abst.)
