| Abstract;A series of low-stimulus hypoallergenic new cosmetics (a shampoo, emulsion, cream, bath solution, and body shampoo) was examined over a period of 4 weeks for safety and improvement of dry skin symptoms in patients with atopic dermatitis and xerosis at 43 medical facilities. 1) The total number of subjects was 434, including 1 subject who visited hospital only on the day that the study was started and 8 subjects who had used the cosmetics for 6 weeks, longer than the designated period. Data taken from 425 individuals was compiled for analysis. Of the subjects with atopic dermatitis, 192 subjects used the shampoo, 97 used the emulsion, 96 used the cream, 100 used the bath solution, and 98 used the body shampoo. Of the subjects with xerosis, 209 used the shampoo, 117 used the emulsion, 96 used the cream, 100 used the bath solution, and 124 used the body shampoo. 2) "Improved" or "Slightly Improved" responses concerning dry skin symptoms were recorded by 56% of the atopic dermatitis subjects for the shampoo, 70% for the emulsion, 70% for the cream, 65% for the bath solution, and 67% for the body shampoo; and for the xerosis subjects, 62% for the shampoo, 72% for the emulsion, 84% for the cream, 84% for the bath solution, and 74% for the body shampoo. 3) In rating global safety, "Safe" was recorded by 95.8% of atopic dermatitis subjects for the shampoo, 94.8% for the emulsion, 90.6% for the cream, 97.0% for the bath solution, and 98.0% for the body shampoo. Xerosis subjects recorded 98.5% for the shampoo, 92.3% for the emulsion, 98.0% for the cream, 98.0% for the bath solution, and 96.0% for the body shampoo. There were no safety problems experienced for any of the cosmetics. 4) The questionnaire revealed ease and comfort of use to be generally good. This range of skin care cosmetics satisfies the three mandatory conditions required for complementary treatments for atopic dermatitis and xerosis:... (author abst.) |
