Abstract; The first report on somatic chromosome numbers and morphology in three species of Japanese Stewartia is present here. The chromosome numbers in the species examined are commonly 2n=34. Karyomorphological differences are found in number of submedian- and subternimal-centromeric chromosomes in respective chromosome complement at mitotic metaphase among the species. It suggests that the base number of Stewartia is x=17, and S. serrata might be originated from cross hybridization between Stewartia monadelph and S. pseudo-camellia. (author abst.)
