| Abstract;Fourteen Astyanax altiparanae specimens were analyzed cytogenetically. The diploid number was equal to 50 chromosomes but different karyotype formulae were evidenced presenting three cytotypes: cytotype 1 with 10M+26SM+4ST+10A(NF=90), cytotype 2 with 10M+24SM+4ST+12A(NF=88) and cytotype 3 with 10M+22SM+4ST+14A(NF=86). Multiple AgNORs were detected in the telomeric regions of the short or long arm of different chromosomes, showing a variation of 1 to 4 nucleolar chromosomes. One SM chromosome with marking in the two telomeres was observed. Treatment with chromomycin A3(CMA3) showed regions rich in GC in different chromosomes, probably coinciding with the AgNORs.
