Abstract;.ALPHA.-Alumina seeded activated alumina powders prepared by the sol-gel method were densified using spark plasma sintering(SPS) at sintering temperatures 1200-1500.DEG.C. for holding time of 3min under uniaxial pressure of 30MPa. As results, a specimen with a relative density of 99.5% could be achieved at 1400.DEG.C. by using the seeded activated alumina powders with seeding concentrations of 5 and 10mass%. By seeding with .ALPHA.-alumina(5 and 10mass%), the sintering temperature was reduced from 1500.DEG.C. for unseeded activated alumina to 1400.DEG.C.. The results revealed that .ALPHA.-alumina seeding was effective for producing dense alumina ceramics from activated alumina powders in the process of SPS. (author abst.)
