Abstract;Vulcanized rubbers generally contain many kinds of additives in order to modify the properties of rubbers as industrial materials. From the analytical point of view, many components complicate the experimental procedures to clarify the actually needed information. In the case of vulcanized rubbers, separation of additives and polymer is the first step to identify the additives and characterize the polymer structure. The authors adopted a thermal desorption method using pyrolysis-gas chromatography to separate low molecular weight organic additives which were compared with solvent extractives obtained from the same vulcanized natural rubber product. From the results, the efficiency of the thermal desorption as a preliminary technique to polymer characterization by pyrolysis GC/MS. (author abst.)
