| Abstract; An ultrastructural analysis of mitotic and meiotic chromosomes was performed on one of four species of Japanese hagfish, E. burgeri(Cyclostomata, Agnatha). The kinetochores in both types of chromosome are three-layered structures along the surfaces of the chromosomes(12-50% of the length of the chromosome) without any constriction. Each kinetochore is composed of electron-dense inner and outer layers 10 to 15nm thick separated by an electron-lucent middle layer 20 to 25nm thick. There have been no prior reports of long kinetochores on chromosomes in other vertebrates. The relationship between the shape of the kinetochores and chromatin diminution in Parascaris is reviewed as a possible basis for chromosome elimination in hagfish. (author abst.) |
