Abstract; It has been indicated that in vivo action of uric acid has two-facedness. By epidemiological studies, it was confirmed that hyperuricemia was a risk factor for causing various diseases in cardial circulation system. On the other hand, by using animal models with central nervous diseases it has been reported that uric acid acts beneficially in vivo as a radical scavenger. Surprisingly, this year, URAT1, an uric acid transporter,is identified, and clarified that URT1 is the causative gene for idiopathic renal hypouricemia. URAT1 also partially verifies the hypothesis for intrarenal uric acid transportation comprised of 4 elements. This article outlines present states of studies on uric acid functions and transport mechanisms.
