Abstract;Development system of vertebrate limbs has been studied as one of excellent experimental model systems for pattern formation. In this system, it has recently been reported innovative experimental data to be reconsidered the models for morphogenic mechanisms which have been supported more than 20 years. It is called progressive band model that cells in progressive band at the tip of limb bud gradually form patterns by counting time along far-and-near axis of limb buds ( direction from the end of hand to armpit ). In order to explain the experimental results which cannot be elucidated by this model, the prepattern model, which signifys to exist previously determined pattern, and the progenitor cells proliferate at the same time with elongation of limb buds, are proposed in this article. New data have also been described on finger morphogenesis as the model that SHH(sonic hedgehog) protein acts as a morphogen. In addition to fibroblast growth factor(FGF), Wnt,and Tbx proteins are newly revealed to be involved in limb bud induction model. These are very important discoveries in the field of developmental biology. This article introduces four limbs development system, explains newly found models, and describes present states of research on four limb morphogenesis.
