Abstract;Merino wool fiber and fabric were treated with ammonia-gas varying the condition, and the fiber was dyed with two acid dyes, C.I. Acid Red 13 and C.I. Acid Blue 83. Apparent dyeing rate, equilibrium dye uptake and dyeing transition temperature were measured. The dyeing rate and equilibrium dye uptake of the treated wool increased with both acid dyes. Also, dyeing transition temperature for both acid dyes decreased by the treatments. Therefore, it seems that acid dyes penetrate by the intercellular diffusion through the interscale Cell Membrane Complex (CMC) of wool. Furthermore, shearing and bending modulus C, B decreased a little by the treatment. The treatment is not always defective to improve the soft hand of the wool fabric. (author abst.)
