Abstract;Ion compositions of body fluids of mammals and the like are always maintained in uniformity. This is one of essential factors to maintain each individual life. Tansports with polarity of ions and water by epithelial tissues of every organs or vectorial transports play the main role to maintain homeostatic ionic environment in bodies. This vectorial transport requires integration of various ion-and water channels and carriers, and active transporters in specific membranous domains of epithelial cells, and their cooperation each other. Many functional protein molecules and genes supporting vectorian transports have recently been identified, and many of them have also been clarified to be the genes causing various hereditary diseases. This article reviews recent knowledges on specific and functional distribution of ion-and water channels in epithelial cells, its role in vectorian transports, and involvement with diseases.
