Abstract; This paper discusses a file sharing method between multiple nodes in SAN (Storage Area Network) environment. In our previous study, we developed a file sharing method using third-party transfer. The verification result of this method was sufficient compared with local I/O performance. However, we think a file sharing method without third-party transfer is reasonable and more useful. In this study, we developed a file sharing method, which through the use of a kernel daemon performs transfer of only I/O related control information between server/client over the network. This daemon method is disk function-independent; moreover, it maintains scalability in striping. We found that implementing this method in the Linux.DAGGER. kernel 2.4.17 allows achievement of nearly 90% of local I/O performance. We also found that in the case of file sharing between the IA-64 Linux machine and SX-6, this method can provide performance that is nearly equal to local I/O for large I/O sizes. (author abst.)
