Abstract; The authors report on surgical treatments and outcomes of colorectal carcinoma in the department of academic surgery, Chiba University, and its affiliated hospitals. The department of academic surgery has 50-year history of training surgeons according to the university curricula and sending them to the affiliated hospitals. We think that the safety and surgical outcomes must be open to the public to evaluate the surgical treatments. From this standpoint, a questionnaire survey asking outcomes for colorectal carcinoma was made on this university hospital and its affiliated hospitals. So far few data on surgical treatments have been reported except those from universities or cancer center hospitals. Our operation-related death rate is lower than a national average reported by the Japan Society for Cancer of the Colon and Rectum. However, it is still controversial among surgeons about the clinical applications of laparoscope-assisted colectomy and preservation of physiological functions along with pelvic nerve dissections. The safety and prognosis by operative methods should be informed to the patients with colorectal carcinoma for the evaluation and selection of operative procedures. We are going to reflect these results reported here for the benefits of the people in the area. (author abst.)
