Abstract;Pancreatic injury is uncommon in contact sports. We report a first case of isolated pancreatic injury in rugby, successfully treated by interventional radiology. An 18-year-old man kicked in the abdomen during a rugby game was referred to our hospital with epigastralgia and dorsalgia 2 days after the incident. Serum amylase was markedly high and computed tomography (CT) showed hematoma of the pancreatic head with acute pancreatitis. The man was hospitalized and treated conservatively, but re-bleeding begun again in the pancreas and severe acute pancreatitis recurred 9 days later. This was treated by transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) of the anterior superior pancreaticoduodenal artery, after which he was discharged. Pancreatic injury may thus occur in minor blunt trauma and detailed imaging is important in diagnosis and treatment. Transcatheter arterial embolization is useful procedure to control hemorrhage from the pancreas. (author abst.)
