Abstract;The plasticizing effects of food antioxidants such as .ALPHA.-tocopherol on the biodegradable plastic poly-(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) P-(HB-HV) were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and tensile testing. It was found that butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and .ALPHA.-tocopherol were useful as plasticizers for P-(HB-HV) (BHA>BHT>.ALPHA.-tocopherol). The heat of fusion of P-(HB-HV) was markedly reduced by the addition of BHA. The elongation to breakage was enhanced by the addition of an antioxidant, and Young's modulus was decreased to 50 MPa by adding 30% BHA, BHT and .ALPHA.-tocopherol. The bioplastic containing antioxidant, therefore, is useful as a biodegradable eco-material. (author abst.)
