Abstract;Urinary incontinence remains a distressing complication following radical prostatectomy. Although the male continence mechanism has not been fully clarified, recent basic and clinical studies have revealed the detailed anatomy and function of the important structures for post-prostatectomy continence, such as the membranous urethra, external urethral sphincter, levator ani muscle and pubourethral ligament. Knowledge of the anatomy and nerve supply of the membranous urethra and external urethral sphincter is essential if urinary continence is to be preserved following radical prostatectomy. In this review, we describe these structures in relation to surgical techniques for preservation of post-prostatectomy continence. (author abst.)
