Abstract;Since the Second World War, the prevalence of gout and hyperuricemia in Japan has increased markedly. Changes of lifestyle - in particular, the westernization of the diet and the increased intake of alcohol - are believed to be responsible for this increase. It is known also that gout and hyperuricemia are frequently accompanied with other lifestyle disorders, such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension, abnormalities in glucose tolerance and obesity. Furthermore, hyperuricemia has recently been observed to be a risk factor in cardiovascular disorders. (author abst.)
