| Abstract; The validity and problems of tutorial instruction as an early exposure for first-year medical students at Kagawa Medical University are discussed. First-year tutorial instruction at Kagawa Medical University, together with the clinical introductory courses in the first-year early exposure to medicine, aims to assist students in acquiring attitudes and techniques for self-study and the ability to participate in discussion and presentation. This time the following three topic areas were chosen: (1) X-ray photograph (Roentgenograph), (2) Beware of overdrinking, (3) Gosh! I hit somebody. What should I do? According to the self-assessment by students who experienced courses in tutorial education, 'positives and presentation abilities' showed some improvement, but in some topic areas 'attitudes towards self-learning and positiveness' remained slightly low. The degree of student satisfaction was quite high in all the topic areas. Compared to the general lectures, the rate of 'absence and lateness' was extremely low except Topic 3. Regarding student assessment of tutors, it was reported that there was some inappropriate interference by tutors. Generally speaking, 'positiveness and general assessment' regarding tutors can be said to be satisfactory. Assessment of students and groups by tutors was slightly low depending partially on topic areas, such as 'scientific discussion' in Topic 2 as well as 'attainability' in Topic 3. Regarding 'positiveness in discussion and presentation ability', there was found some difference among groups or among students in groups. These differences require further discussion. Generally speaking, the tutorial instruction that involved the first-year students of Kagawa Medical University indicated an extremely high degree of satisfaction among students, and was found to be effective in developing problem-solving skills, of presenting ideas and of self-learning....
