| Abstract;Five patients who suffered from ankle pain due to malunion of a fibula fracture underwent surgery to effect fibular lengthening. Three cases were treated by one stage surgery with iliac bone graft, and two cases were treated by callotasis with external fixator. All patients had osteoarthritis in their ankles. Post-operatively the emprical axis had improved on average from 86 to 77 degrees. The width of the joint space of the medial ankle was reduced on average from 8.3 to 3.8mm. The clinical score for osteoarthritis according to the Japanese orthopaedic association had improved from 49 point to 82 points post-operatively, in spite of insufficient reduction in two cases. This study indicates that fibular lengthening may improve ankle function even if the patient suffers degenerative change in the ankle joint. (author abst.) |
