| Abstract;Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the incidence of which has been increasing, is commonly observed among hepatitis C virus (HCV) carriers. The inhibition of disease progress in HCV carriers is the most effective means to prevent the development of HCC. There are many HCV carriers with normal serum ALT levels and without exhibiting any symptoms. It is, therefore, important to examine a population for HCV and to identify HCV carriers. When the natural course of serum ALT levels was observed in HCV carriers with normal serum ALT levels at the first examination of the population, which accounted for 70% of HCV carriers examined, serum ALT levels fluctuated outside the normal range in approximately 48% of HCV carriers during the 10-year follow-up. It is necessary to establish a periodic follow-up system for HCV carriers and to administer medical treatment according to the state of the disease. (author abst.) |
