Abstract;Chronic hepatitis C is a common disease that slowly progresses to cirrhosis and eventually to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Many studies have shown an inhibition of development of HCC after interferon therapy. A recent study has demonstrated an inhibition of HCC by interferon therapy even considering the fibrosis staging which is significantly associated with a risk for HCC. Multivariate analysis demonstrates a significant association of interferon therapy with a reduced risk for HCC, especially among patients with persistently normal serum alanine aminotransferase levels as well as among those with sustained virologic response. Improvement of survival of chronic hepatitis C patients has also been demonstrated, especially in patients with sustained virologic response to interferon therapy and without liver cirrhosis. More effective therapeutic strategy should be developed to improve the effectiveness of interferon therapy. Moreover, a randomized controlled study using a large number of subjects with a more than 5-year observation period will be required to elucidate the exact role of antiviral therapy for the suppression of HCC and improvement of life expectancy.
