| Abstract; To evaluate the effect of low doses of interferon (IFN) in treatment of patients with chronic hepatitis C, 24 patients were treated with 1 to 1.5 MIU of interferon-alpha three or all days weekly for over 24 weeks. Serum ALT level was 121 .+-. 44 IU before treatment and 58.4 .+-. 39.5 IU at 18 weeks of treatment. Normalization of ALT levels was observed in 8 of 24 (33.3%) patients and ALT levels less than twice the normal range of ALT in 15 of 24 (62.5%). Decreased levels of ALT compared with pretreatment were sustained after cessation of treatment. Number of platelets was 9.4 .+-. 2.6 * 104/.MU.L at the end of treatment compared with 11.6 .+-. 3.8 * 104/.MU.L before treatment. In one case, serum HCV RNA was disappeared after the cessation of IFN treatment. For the purpose of decreasing ALT levels and slowing the advance of liver fibrosis, use of low doses of IFN for a prolonged period appears to be useful for patients who were non-responders to at previous IFN treatment or who could not be treated with IFN because of the risk of adverse effects with usual IFN treatment.
