| Abstract;Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major cause of chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. It is estimated that HCV has infected more than 170 million people worldwide. Interferon was only treatment available for hepatitis C for many years. However, interferon is suitable for only limited patient population, and not effective for more than half of patients with hepatitis C. Moreover, interferon treatment is often poorly tolerated, prolonged, and expensive. Thus, it is urgent to develop new strategies to treat hepatitis C, which is suitable for the majority of patients with hepatitis C, highly effective, less side effects, orally available, and cost effective. Current developments in anti-HCV agents are reviewed in the context of new viral targets for the future treatment of patients with chronic HCV infection. (author abst.) |
