Abstract; The method has been developed for the spectrophotometric determination of trithionate at 10-5 M levels, in which trithionate is allowed to react with a known amount of permanganate in an acidic medium, the excess permanganate is converted into iodine, and the iodine produced is measured spectrophotometrically as triiodide at 350 nm. The conditions for the reaction of trithionate with permanganate were investigated by varying acidity of reaction solution, amount of permanganate, reaction time and reaction temperature. Under the optimal conditions, one mole of trithionate was found to react stoichiometrically with 1.5 moles permanganate. The proposed method can be applied to determination of trithionate in the range 0-3.2*10-5 M, and it gives a higher sensitivity for the determination of trithionate than any previous photometric methods.
