Abstract;Clinical pathway can be a useful tool for process control and standardization in healthcare processes. However, understanding on its essential values is not sufficient. One of the examples is a way of dealing with a "variance", that is a discrepancy from a planned pathway. They accept a variance without much thought. Patient state is naturally various and diverse, making it difficult to apply one standardized pathway to any patients. They should deeply understand the meaning and significance of standardization. The authors discuss the essential points of clinical pathways focusing on "process control" and "standardization". Particularly, they reconsider the meaning and significance of standardization, which is often misunderstood. They also propose "patient state dependent adaptive pathway" as one of the means of making best use of clinical pathway. This will enable an adaptive plan for healthcare process depending on a patient state. (author abst.)
