Abstract;Clinical pathways are useful method to reduce variation in care, decrease resource utilization, and potentially improve health care quality. Cardiovascular medicine in particular is an area in which clinical pathways have been embraced. We developed a new clinical pathways format which consists of overview type, one day type and patient pathway, and one of the pathways was applied to two hundred forty two patients of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). 173 AMI patients (71%) were treated with our clinical pathways (group A) according to criteria of pathway and compared with 238 patients treated without the pathway (group B). Average length of stay is shorter in group A than in group B (18.5.+-.15.5 vs 24.5.+-.15.0, p<0.001) but in-hospital mortality rate of group A and B was much the same (10.9% vs 9.3%, NS). Our clinical pathways for AMI could shorten total hospital length of stay without impairment of outcome by obeying inclusion and exclusion criteria. (author abst.)
