Abstract; We surveyed the status of visually handicapped persons who entered 29 rehabilitation centers in 2001. There were 1,310 persons comprising 883 males and 427 females. The major causes of visual impairment were retinitis pigmentosa 25%, optic atrophy 15% and diabetic retinopathy 9%. The incidence of females was 33%, which was an increase irom 23% in a similar survey in 1986. Regarding the residual visual function, the present survey showed an increase in total blindness and a decrease in low vision. These findings are expected to serve as a guide in attempts at rehabilitation. (author abst.)
