Abstract; We modified the edge of optics of PMMA one-piece intraocular lens(IOL) to reduce the opacification of posterior capsule. Cataract surgery was performed on both eyes of 20 patients. Each patient received normal-edged IOL in one eye and sharp-edged IOL in the other. Their age ranged from 60 to 85 years, average 70 years. An anterior image analyzer was used to quantitate the opacification of posterior capsule. Three months after surgery, there was no difference in visual acuity between the pairs of eyes. Eyes receiving sharp-edged IOL showed significantly lesser opacification than the fellow eyes(p<0.01). (author abst.)
