| Abstract;We studied the internal limiting membrane(ILM) in the macula regarding the ultrastructure and trace elements. Materials were obtained from 3 eyes. One was obtained from an enucleated normal eyeball in a 70-year-old woman with orbital malignancy. Two were obtained during surgery for macular hole in females aged 66 and 72 years. A transmission electron microscope was used to study the ultrastructure. Trace elements were analyzed using an energy dispersive X-ray analyzer. The ILM in all the 3 specimens showed filaments disarrayed in amorphous substance and granular structures of high electron density. Iron was the only trace element detected. There were no differences in the iron content among the 3 specimens. (author abst.) |
