Abstract; We measured the retinal thickness in 55 eyes of idiopathic macular hole more than one year after successful vitreous surgery. Additional peeling of internal limiting membrane(ILM) was performed in 24 eyes and not in 31 eyes. An optical coherence tomography(OCT) was used in measuring the foveal thickness and the retinal thickness in 4 vertical and horizontal directions 700.MU.m away from the fovea. The thickness of the fovea averaged 188.9.+-.57.1.MU.m in eyes receiving ILM peeling and 126.0.+-.30.5.MU.m in those without peeling. The difference was significant(p<0.0001). There were no significant differences in retinal thickness or postoperative visual acuity between the two groups. Eyes receiving ILM peeling had lesser foveal depression than those without.
