| Abstract;Pigment epithelium-derived factor(PEDF) has been claimed to be a potent inhibitor of ocular angiogenesis. Using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA), we quantitated the intraviteal levels of PEDF and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in patients of diabetic retinopathy. The series comprised 23 eyes of proliferative diabetic retinopathy(PDR) and 3 eyes of nonproliferative one(NPDR). Vitreous specimen from 11 eyes of idiopathic macular hole served as control. The concentration of PEDF averaged 1.58.MU.g/ml in the control, 0.81.MU.g/ml in PDR, and 2.44.MU.g/ml in NPDR. There was a significant difference between control and PDR(p=0.005) and between PDR and NPDR(p=0.006). The concentration of VEGF was not detectable in the control, averaged 2,090pg/ml in PDR and 15pg/ml in NPDR. There was a significant difference between control and PDR(p=0.005). The findings show that lower levels of PEDF may be related to angiogenesis in diabetic retinopathy resulting in PDR. (author abst.) |
