Abstract; The pharmacological action of the NMDA(N-methyl-D-aspartic acid) receptor antagonist was explained with emphasis on ketamine.Ketamine shows a strong analgesic action on the anesthetic action and the superficiality perception in the central nervous system. It is widely used as an analgesic adjuvant in the clinic, because it is effective for treatment of the cancerous pain for which morphine is hardly effective. But ketamine itself has an action of induction of an unpleasant mental condition.Although the NMDA receptor antagonist can be expected to have wide clinical applications, the diversity in its pharmacological action is possibly produced by different combinations of the subunits.
