Abstract;General anesthesia is a phenomenon brought about by a reversible action of the anesthetic on the brain and the spinal cord. This is not a single phenomenon but a compound phenomenon which consists of various elements; it is composed of reversible amnesia, consciousness absence, analgesia, lowered sense, immobilization, autonomic nerve suppression and others. The features of general anesthesia and the action mechanism(single-mechanism theory, drug specificity theory) of general anesthetics were described. Moreover, the action mechanism of general anesthetics at various levels from individuals to molecules was outlined also with an added description of the historical flow between the present influential hypothesis and the past hypothesis.
