Abstract; As a rapid and accurate method, time domain reflectometry (TDR) is widely used to determine volumetric water content from apparent measured relative dielectric constant, .EPSILON.. TDR measurement was applied in Inner Mongolia Hetao Irrigation District of China both in warm season and cold season. For evaluating unfrozen water content, the liquid water was divided into free water and bound water and we tested De Loor model and Birchak model to make calibration of the unfrozen water content. It was proved that Birchak model is the best one to make calibration. Because of the similarity of dielectric property of bound water and ice, Birchak model was applied for evaluation of unfrozen water content in frozen soil. The calculated results were proved to be almost coincident with actual soil status that was expressed by soil temperature, gravimetric water content and so on in the field. (author abst.)
