| Abstract;"Adult AD/HD" has not been widely recognized in Japan, and therefore has not previously been investigated. Recently, information about "Adult AD/HD" has been spread to the general public via the Internet, and the number of self-referred patients at our clinic has increased. We investigated the clinical characteristics of some of these patients. Fifteen (seven men, eight women) persons with AD/HD as their chief complaint were seen at the child and adolescent psychiatry unit at the hospital of the School of Medicine, Tokai University from April 2000 to March 2001. Their histories were obtained, and their current clinical symptoms and those shown before seven years of age assessed on the AD/HD-Rating Scale-IV. Clinical examinations also were performed. AD/HD was diagnosed for 5 (33.3%) of them with DSM-IV as the standard. The number of items related to inattention exceeded the numbers for hyperactivity and impulsivity in terms of the average AD/HD-RS-IV score. All five patients for whom information before age seven was available were confirmed as having symptoms of AD/HD, and the existence of impairment before age seven was verified. The WAIS-R test was given, and results were similar to those reported for childhood AD/HD. (author abst.) |
